Ocean Globe Race 2023
I was media woman onboard the boat L'Esprit d'Équipe, for the first leg of the Ocean Globe Race, from Southampton (England) to Cape Town (South Africa). It's a vintage race where GPS, computers, and mobile phones are not allowed. To navigate, we relied solely on the sun, the moon, the stars, and the timeless art of celestial navigation using a sextant. Completely cut off from the rest of the world, our only means of communication was through HF radio with the other boats. Sailing nonstop, day and night, it took us 45 days to reach Cape Town from England, securing 5th place in the real-time rankings. On October 25, 2023, we arrived at the port of Cape Town, exhilarated by this extraordinary journey and more than a little relieved to swap freeze-dried meals for real food at last.
